Are Zoos a Danger to Animals and the Public? – Topic of Television Show

June 21, 2016 by Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein 18 Comments

Join me Wednesday,  June 22nd @ 6:30 PM, when Kate Dylewsky,  Program Associate for Born Free USA, will be my guest to talk about safety at zoos for its visitors and the animals.   Are zoos safe for the public in light of the little boy who was able to climb into the enclosure of the silverback gorillas last month at the Cincinnati Zoo?   How was anyone able to get into an enclosure meant for gorillas?

This isn’t an isolated incident.   Last year, a wolf named Rebel was killed after a young boy put his fingers through a cage where they were nipped by the wolf.  It was a minor injury.  The family of the boy went into a restricted area (not meant for the public) to be closer to the wolves.    The zoo allowed the family to make the decision between having Rebel tested for rabies or having their son given an injection to protect him against rabies.  Because of their inappropriate and wrong behavior at the zoo and deciding to have the animal tested for rabies,  an innocent wolf lost his life.   Rebel tested negative for rabies.

One of the four wolves at Menominee Park Zoo in Wisconsin. A wolf was euthanized after visitors took advantage of an improperly opened gate and entered an area where the public isn't allowed. A four-year old boy's hand was nipped after he stuck his fingers through a fence resulting in the death of Rebel, a 12 year old wolf.

Zoos aren’t good for animals. They’re confined despite how much room u think they give them. They can’t replicate the wild. Only way to do that is keeping them in the wild.

I caught your show tonight. Your show is good and so Was your guest. I would’ve included the boy who was killed in Florida by an alligator. Just saying.

Close all zoos. Wild animals don’t belong there. How do they benefit from living inside small areas when they’re supposed to be living out in the wild where they can be free? It’s all about greed!

The zoos are responsible for making sure the public is kept safe from the animals. The little boy should’ve never been able to climb in, climb over or get into the gorillas enclosure, ever! The zoo had a flaw in their system. I couldn’t believe how people were all over the parents for not watching their child. How many parents literally watch their child 24/7 wherever they go? When I go to parks, I watch as parents take their eyes off their children to look at their stupid phones! I don’t know what the parents were doing when the child went in there and I heard he told his mom he wanted to be in there. I don’t believe any parent can or has kept their eyes peeled on their kids every single minute when they go out. That is why accidents happen. That is why there are news stories about kids getting stuck in the weirdest places.
Before you judge someone else, look in the mirror first!

The mom should of been watching her boy and not taking a selfie. What’s wrong with today’s parenting? Sigh. Makes me so mad that people aren’t watching their children like they should.

Zoos are terrible places for animals. They are torture for animals. I would free each and every one if I could. They should be left in their natural homes. People ruin everything for animals. It’s all about money and greed. Money isn’t evil. It’s how people use it for evil purposes. Watch animals in the wild not behind bars or enclosures. They aren’t remotely close to their natural environments.

Hate zoos. Don’t ever visit them. Caging animals isn’t normal. Everything is about money. Profiting off the misery of animals should be a crime.

Thank you very much for doing a program on this. Everybody thinks zoos are such wonderful places to visit. It’s animal cruelty.

I think zoos keep certain species of animals safe. I don’t think most zoos abuse animals and have their best interests at heart.

Yes! They confine them and they’re not able to live in their natural habitat. Thank you for your show.

Zoos are no place for animals. They are cruel and unnatural for animals. Wild animals need to be in the wild to be free.

Zoos aren’t good places for animals. Caged 24/7 isn’t healthy for the animals.

Some zoos are bad for animals. It’s unnatural to keep them penned up instead of being able to run free in the wild. I guess they can be good for animals too because they can save certain species that may be going extinct. I hate seeing animals cooped up and on display as if they’re not living, breathing animals. How would people like if they were on display for the world to see their every movement?
