A 33 year old woman snuck into a zoo early yesterday morning and was bitten by a tiger at the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, Nebraska.   According to the Omaha  Police Department’s press release, Jaqueline Eide entered the zoo without authorization for the sole purpose of petting a  tiger.

Trespassing/Injury

3701 S 10th Street – Henry Doorly Zoo
RB#  AH31581
Officers received a call to Creighton University Medical Center regarding a disturbance with a patient that had an injury to her left hand.Officers made contact with the victim/suspect who was identified as Jacqueline Eide 5-9-82.  Eide was aggressive toward staff and showed signs of intoxication of alcohol and/or drugs.Through investigation, it was learned that Eide had made unauthorized entry into the Zoo to pet a tiger.  When she reached into the cage, she was bitten causing severe trauma to her hand. She was then transported to the hospital by a friend.Contact was made with Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and this incident is under investigation.  Eide was cited for Criminal Trespass and remained at the hospital for treatment.

No one is quite sure how Eide got past security and fences to gain entry to the zoo.

After placing her hand into the cage,  Eide suffered severe trauma to her left hand from the tiger’s bite .  Eide may lose parts of her fingers, police said.  She is still hospitalized.

Malayan Tiger – NOT the tiger who bit Jacqueline Eide

The tiger believed to have bitten the woman is  Mai, an 18-year-old Malayan tiger who is missing her left front leg,  kept at the zoo’s Cat Complex.  Malayan tigers are one of the smallest types of all subspecies.

The Cat Complex is one of the largest single buildings used for cat breeding and management facility in North America. The building is capable of holding up to 100 large cats. Currently, the Cat Complex houses 30 cats including three subspecies of tiger, lion, jaguar,  Amur leopard and the North American puma according to the zoo’s website.

The incidence is under investigation.  The zoo won’t be releasing video surveillance and did say the tiger won’t be quarantined.   Mai will continue to be on display at the zoo with nothing happening to her as a result of the actions of a unauthorized trespasser.

Many people across the internet are upset over what happens to the tiger and not Eide.

Eide has a history of breaking the law.  In 2011, she was sentenced to prison for her third DUI.  She has been convicted of drunk driving, graffiti, disturbing the peace and obstruction of justice and shoplifting.

Jacqueline Eide has been cited fro criminal trespass.

Dennis Pate, the zoo’s executive director and CEO, issued the following statement:

“The safety and security of our guests and animals are always a priority at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. Emergency phone numbers are printed on maps for guests to call in case of an emergency and security staff keep watch on grounds around the clock. We have added security cameras, new path lighting and computer-controlled locks to track exit and entry. Additional path lighting is planned for the new African Grasslands exhibit and more cameras will be installed to monitor the grounds and gates.

“We will continue to keep security a top priority for Zoo guests and animals.”

How the hell was she able to break into a zoo? I’d think they’d have a security system. If they do, it failed. If they don’t, it’s way past time to get it. The animals need to be protected. I guess dumb people need to be protected from the animals.

There is something wrong with this woman’s brain. Even if you’re on drugs or you’re drinking who in their right mind would enter a zoo to pet a wild animal? This woman needs psychological help. I guess you live and you learn

Yeah one more thing I hate zoos and the way animals are kept confined. It’s not natural for these wild animals to be kept in small enclosures.

This has to be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read. Drunk or not, you don’t ever want to pet a tiger through a cage! lol
