Webinar: Wild News, Sensationalism, Critical Thinking, and Modern Media

The role social media plays in our lives is vast – and with it, the way we consume news and information is changing regularly. When it comes to our wild neighbours that can have disastrous consequences, both for media consumers who may be intentionally misled, and for the animals who can fall victim to poor policy as a result.

The Fur-Bearers’ Director of Digital Content & Special Projects Michael Howie will lead this webinar on how media sensationalism impacts Canadians, why critical thinking skills need to be honed, and what the consequences have been for animals when the news gets a little too wild. Michael left a career as an award-winning journalist – he won 17 awards for news and editorial writing on subjects ranging from organized crime to environmentalism – to join the non-profit sector and The Fur-Bearers. Topics will include studies on sensationalism and coyotes, anthropomorphism, and skills to help consumers fact-check social media posts.
