Explosive Comments Prompt Cleveland County Sheriff Dep’t to remove Puppy Raffle from Facebook Page

“Here is the K-9 (German Shepard) we will be selling tickets for at the fair this year. Tickets are $1 and we will raffle off last day of fair. A 10X10 kennel and dog house will come with the puppy. We will also be selling t-shirts and sweaters.”

This is what the Cleveland County Sheriff Department originally had posted on their Facebook Page when they made the announcement they were raffling off a puppy at a local fair.  The North Carolina Sheriff Department posted the above description for the puppy on September 1st.

Thousands of angry comments were left by hostile people who bombarded their facebook page under photos of the puppy being raffled.  The public politely and not-so-politely told the Sheriff”s Departmen this was not a good idea.  Many found this post incredulous as did I.

Unfortunately, puppies are still given as a prize in raffles/fundraisers/auctions.  Handing a puppy over to someone to whom you have no idea can and will take care of the puppy is irresponsible, to say the least.

Plus, the “winner” will receive a dog house with the puppy.  This signals that the dog will be kept outside tethered to that house for his life.  I ask you, what kind of life is this?

This puppy will be the loser on all fronts.

I have written to Sheriff Alan Norman of the Cleveland County Sheriff Department to ask if the removal of the post was a sign that the puppy won’t be raffled.  I will let you know what I’m told.

If you would like to have your voice be heard on this matter,  you can call the Sheriff Department at  704-484-4888. You can also visit their website to leave a written comment. Clic  the contact us link.

Let’s hope this puppy finds a suitable home in the right manner.

Puppy raffles are still held across the country. some vet the people and others don’t care. It’s a bad idea all the way around.
