HOW DO WE CONVINCE PEOPLE NOT TO BUY FROM A PET STORE?

July 25, 2011 by Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein

To those of us in the animal welfare field or even those who love animals and are keenly aware of the pet store-puppy mill connection : how do we convincly argue the point that buying that all-too-cute puppy from the pet store is breeding misery for breeder dogs stuck in puppy mills?
One just has to walk by and look in the window where they place the puppy for the impulsive consumer to see. How could one not resist? How can one not resist saving that animal’s life after it has been sitting in the pet store for months on end? Who wouldn’t want to save the poor puppy’s life? And also learn the cost for the puppy has been slashed over half-price.
How do you convince that person that leaving that puppy there will help the puppy mill industry when YOU know that puppy will either end up back at the puppy mill as a breeder or experience a worse fate-death?
How do we make a convincing argument not to buy that cute puppy?
