HUMANE SOCIETY of BERKS COUNTY HAS REMOVED DOGS FROM ANOTHER KENNEL IN MAXATAWNY TOWNSHIP

September 3, 2008 by Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein

According to the Reading Eagle, nine dogs have been seized from Aaron Burkholder’s kennel farm in Maxatawny Township. This is another Mennonite farm as was the case with Elmer and Ammon Zimmerman who shot and killed 80 dogs after being cited by a dog warden.( You can read more about the candlelight vigil and the talk I had with Elmer afterwards on my blog. Just scroll down to the entry – Candlelight Vigil for Puppymill Dogs.
You can read about the Burkholder situation here. As I write this, a Humane Society Officer is at the scene of the farm while a court order is approved to remove the remainder of the 75 dogs. This is a wise move on the Humane Society’s part so we don’t have a repeat of what happened with the Zimmerman brothers! The Humane Society also wants to revoke the kennel license. God, I hope it happens.
It sickens me to know these kennels exist practically in our own backyards but I am so happy these dogs’ lives are being saved as I write this and hopefully will get a second chance at a better life.
It’s about time we crack down on puppymills!!
