KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE AT HOME THIS 4TH OF JULY

July 3, 2009 by Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein

Here’s wishing everyone a happy and safe 4th of July!! I would be remiss, of course, if I didn’t mention to keep your pets at home particularly during the fireworks displays happening all around the country this weekend.
Fireworks can be an absolute nightmare for many pets. Excessive fear from the loud booms and the flashing bright lights can cause your pet to exhibit behaviors such as trembling and whimpering or perhaps trying to run away.
My one dog, Prince, used to tremble so badly from thunderstorms. He couldn’t relax until the storm passed. I always felt so badly for him. I have a friend whose dog is even worse from storms and has been given medication to calm her when storms hit. Unfortunately, storms are unpredictable and meds have to be given in plenty of time to take effect.
That’s why it is important to leave your pet at home and away from firework displays.
Other suggestions are to close all doors and windows and put on background music to muffle the sound. My dogs enjoy that!
Closing curtains and blinds can help to block out the flashing lights.
Make sure your pet has proper ID on him/her in the event the pet runs away. This little tidbit of info can help you to reunite with your pet.
Also a reminder, it really isn’t a good idea to give your pet much people food. I am guilty of that myself. With all of the party foods this weekend, it truly isn’t wise to share that with your pet. You don’t want have to make an emergency visit to your veterinarian because your dog or cat ate something he/she shouldn’t have!
Have a great 4th of July!!
