MALE BABY CHICKS SLAUGHTERED IN GRINDER- MERCY KILLING OR JUST PLAIN MURDER?

September 3, 2009 by Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein

An undercover video taped by a member of Mercy for Animals reveals a shocking truth about what happens to millions of male baby chicks in egg hatcheries each years.
According to Mercy for Animals, on the day baby chicks hatch from their eggs, they are immediately sexed. “Sexers” separate females from the males. Females are kept and the males are sent thrown into a chute to be ground up ALIVE in high speed meat grinders!
Why, you ask? Because they are not wanted nor needed. Since males can’t lay eggs, they are killed. We’re talking about at least 30 million male baby chicks who are gruesomely killed each year at Hy-Line International, the world’s largest egg-laying breed hatchery. Hy-Line says they have absolutely no use for them. They claim placing them in these grinders is a fast and painless way to end their one-day old lives.
According to Mercy for Animals and United Egg Producers, approximately 200 million male chicks are killed each year because they can find no use for them. They claim they can’t be used as meat either. Their answer is to throw all of the males away.
Were you aware all male baby chicks were killed in egg hatcheries? Were you also aware male chicks can’t be used for meat? For me and I’m sorry to say, I wasn’t aware of this barbaric practice even though it has been around for a long time. This has been a well-kept secret, at least to me.
We know now the problem but what is the solution? As much as I am horrified I can’t come up with a solution. Become a vegan or vegetarian? I don’t think the vast majority of people will make the change. Boycott eggs or chicken? Don’t think that will happen either. So what can be done to end this cruel and most horrific practice?
Anyone have a credible solution?
