RUNNING OF THE BULLS ~ WHY?

Video of the running of the bulls
The running of the bulls is taking place starting today in Pamplona, Spain. This dangerous race is run every morning for a week where six bulls are run and two herds of tame steer run through the center of Pamplona.
The race which lasts about three minutes leads the bulls directly to the bullring where they are later killed.
Are there any Spanish people reading this who can explain why this is done? Or anyone for that matter? Why would anyone run in front of the bulls?
Fourteen people have been killed since it started in 1924 and over 200 people have been injured. Click here to see some of those injuries: http://www.youtube.com/v/A_6N9Cy14Jg&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0
Perhaps the tables should be turned and have 30 bulls in the ring and one person trying to escape. Sounds fair to me. No, you say. Well neither does this race.
