SMOKEY, 12-WEEK OLD CHIHUAHA SURVIVES OVERSIZED FORK STUCK IN HIS BRAIN

July 17, 2009 by Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein

Hughie Wagers was having a cookout when unexpectedly the oversized fork he was using flew in the air. As the part of the handle broke off, the fork impaled itself in his 12-week old puppy’s head. Smokey, the unfortunate recipient of this horrific accident, is one lucky dog.

Smokey ran off into the woods and it wasn’t until two days later that he was found whimpering in those very woods.
Mr. Wagers proceeded to take him to his local animal hospital where the veterinarian who would treat him thought he was going to pass out when he first saw Smokey. Euthanization was a consideration, said the veterinarian on the Today show this morning. But he decided to x-ray Smokey’s injury first as you can tell here.

The veterinarian made the decision to pull out the fork which took only 30 seconds.
Smokey is expected to make a full recovery. However, as of right now, he has some paralysis in his right eye and is sleepy.

But as the veterinarian said, Smokey is a puppy and that is what puppies do and besides, he is a “lap potato”.
I guess my only question is ~ why did it take Mr. Wagers two days to find his dog with a huge fork stuck in his head? Something doesn’t add up for me but I’m glad this poor thing is out of his misery!
