STUDENTS FRIGHTEN MOOSE TO HIS DEATH

April 22, 2009 by Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein

A number of eighth grade (middle school) students from Alaska frightened a year old moose to its death according to this article.
Apparently a physical education class was sent outside for activities before it was realized that a moose was nearby. Some of the students, not sure how many, decided to taunt the moose. Some accounts have these students throwing rocks and poking the moose with sticks.

The year old moose panicked which is normal behavior if it feels its life is threatened. A moose will attempt to escape the capture from its predator. The panic led the moose to repeatedly throw himself into a wall, thus resulting in his death.
A teacher witnessed the taunts. I have no idea if an attempt was made to stop the students. However, the bigger question lies in the fact that these students have been disciplined for taunting and frightening this moose but I have to wonder why this school won’t release any deatils about this case. What are they covering up?
I understand these kids are minors. BUT, this is an obvious case of animal cruelty and I feel they should be charged accordingly and not just disciplined by the school.
How can anyone stand idly by and allow these students to taunt a moose? Some have said many stood around laughing about the incident while others were crying. Why didn’t anyone intervene? There are more questions than answers in my opinion.
If these kids get their kicks out of a moose killling himself, what is the next step for these youngsters – killing people’s beloved pets? It is a proven fact that animal abuse is a precursor to the abuse of humans. To dismiss this case with simple school disciplinary actions is not enough!
About a week and half ago in Texas, two teenagers decided to douse two of their own pitbulls with lighter fluid and set them on fire. Witnesses saw two fireballs running down the pavement. Both were humanely euthanized the next day because of their extensive injuries. A vigil was held for these dogs last week.
What is going on with teenagers- to get a thrill out of hurting, maiming and killing innocent animals?
A message needs to be sent and those responsible should be charged with animal cruetly!
Do you think school disciplinary action is enough or does this warrant a case of animal cruelty to be charged against those responsible for the death of this moose?
