TEEN WHO LEFT KITTEN IN OVEN WILL SPEND A YEAR IN JAIL UNDER PLEA AGREEMENT

July 16, 2009 by Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein

Cheyenne Cherry
Cheyenne Cherry is the teenager who left her former roommate’s kitten in the oven to die. Cherry pled guilty to charges of animal cruelty to the killling of Lily and attempted burglary yesterday and she will serve a year in jail under a plea agreement.
Animal welfare advocates, including myself, were outraged over this horrific story. Many of us signed a petition to make sure she received jail time. Some of these activists were outside the courtroom when Cherry confronted them. She stuck out her tongue and told them the kitten she killed was “dead”.
According to the article, authorities say Cherry and a 14 yr. old friend put the kitten in the oven where it cried and scratched before dying. The 14 yr. old was charged with aggravated animal cruelty and burglary. I don’t know the sentence for the friend.
I remember her sibling saying that Cherry loves animals and wouldn’t do something like this. Her behavior after being sentenced clearly illustrated that point. Yes, that was sarcasm. I feel the reason she received a one-year sentence was because of the burglary. My opinion is that she should have received more time but I am thankful she will be serving jail time. Now, how soon will she be released on “good behavior”? Do you think the sentence was fair?
