Trader Joe’s Facing Lawsuit over Deceptive “Cage-Free” Egg Labeling

March 15, 2018 by Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein 5 Comments

Trader Joe’s has been deceiving the public by proclaiming their cage-free eggs come from hens raised in green, wide-open pastures according to a lawsuit filed today on behalf of a Trader Joe’s purchaser.    The lawsuit is claiming Trader Joe’s is using deceptive ads which are misleading consumers who buy cage-free eggs.

The consumer protection lawsuit filed by the Animal Legal Defense Fund in California Superior Court seeks to stop Trader Joe’s from its deceptive labeling.   Trader Joe’s deceptive marketing violates multiple California consumer protection laws including the Unfair Competition Law, False Advertising Law, and Consumer Legal Remedies Act.

The lawsuit claims Trader Joe’s eggs come from hens who spend their entire lives inside massive industrial hen houses without any outdoor access.   The hens are packed into warehouses with thousands of other birds and have never seen or been on grass.  In other words, the eggs come from factory farms.

The “cage-free” eggs are packaged in cartons emblazoned with images of hens foraging outdoors in green, wide-open pastures.

The lawsuit contends that the images used on the package mislead consumers about the conditions in which hens were raised.

The law firm of Fazio Micheletti LLP is serving as co-counsel in this case.

The goal of the ALDF lawsuit is to stop this illegal practice and protect consumers and hens.

And how many other places claim the same thing? This happens more than you think. It’s much easier to lie Venditto the truth. I see ““ cage free eggs a lot now in stores because it’s the in thing to do. I just don’t believe all the stores who claim to sell cage free eggs.

Any way someone can make a quick buck at the cost of hurting or exploiting animals, people will do it because it’s done every day. I’m sure other stores do the same thing.

Too easy to deceive people especially with cage-free eggs. Who’s going to check out the farm?

Factory farming is the largest animal cruelty ring there is. It tortures more animals than people do to their pets every single day. Factory farming is the worst. Why do people want to eat food when the animals they’re eating have been abused so badly? Think about where your food was before it ended up on your dish?
