WHAT WILL BE THE IMPACT OF THE OIL SPILL ON THE WILDLIFE ALONG THE GULF COAST

May 5, 2010 by Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein

According to Jeff Corwin, host of the Jeff Corwin Experience on Animal Planet and someone who has worked for the conservation of endangered species and ecosystems around the world since he was a teenager says the damage to wildlife caused by this massive BP oil spill is uncertain but could be worse than the Exxon Valdez oil spill off the shores in Alaska in 1989. That oil spill left 250,000 animals dead.

This oil spill could affect over 400 species of animals which rely on this area for food, cover and breeding. So far 13 sea turtles have washed ashore. Pelicans and other seabirds are currently nesting along the Louisiana coast. This is all in the direction of the oil spill.

So what is going to happen to the wildlife some of which are rare, endangered and threatened species?

Different animal organizations are on the scene but is it enough for what could turn out to be the worst oil spill in US history?
