3 Bellevue, TN PetSmart Employees Cited for Animal Cruelty after March Raid

May 9, 2018 by Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein 3 Comments

Three employees from a Bellevue, Tennessee PetSmart Store – Store leader, Greg Gordon, 31,Assistant store leader Kristopher Stengel, 39, Customer Engagement leader, Tonya Smith, 39 – were each charged with animal cruelty in connection with the raid and investigation on March 29th, 2018 by the Metro Animal Care and Control officials, Metro Police and investigators from the District Attorney’s office when six animals were found to be neglected and/or abused.     Each is charged with a misdemeanor since it is their offense.
The six animals- guinea pig, mice, and hamsters – were removed and taken to a local veterinarian to be examined.    As of today, the animals have improved and are doing okay.

Metro Animal Care and Control received information about animal abuse and a video from other store employees that showed “what appeared to be inadequate care for injured animals” at the store, according to the Metro Public Health Department.

The District Attorney’s office and Metro’s Law Department were shown this evidence by MACC, which ended with the execution of a search warrant at the store on March 29th.

PetSmart said in a statement,  that “some of the footage is several years old,” but indicated the company was working with authorities “to obtain the relevant facts” and encouraged store associates to have any sick animal seen by a veterinarian if needed.

The trio will return to court on June 26 for the animal cruelty charges.

PetSmart is losing its good reputation. Between the pets who are injured or dying in their grooming salons and animals abused in their stores, it doesn’t appear that they care about animals. They need to do something to change their image. I won’t be shopping there anymore.

Do the people they hire have any background dealing with or helping animals? Doesn’t seem like it.

I don’t know what PetSmart’s requirements are for hiring people in their stores. That’s a good question!

      Thanks!
