Australia Plans to Kill 2 Million Cats – Alley Cat Allies Asking for Pledge Support Worldwide

Australia’s Minister of Environment plans to kill 2 million cats by 2020 in an attempt to save wildlife.  Becky Robinson, president and founder of Alley Cat Allies who recently visited Australia for two weeks, is calling on individuals and organizations – both in Australia and around the world – to take a pledge support against the culling of the cats.

Alley Cat Allies says habitat destruction and not cats has caused dozens of species to go extinct in Australia and endangers many more.  Instead of focusing on protecting the bush, Mr. Hunt has waged a war on cats according to the nonprofit cat advocacy organization.

Robinson visited Australia to meet with coalitions of people who are working against the government’s cat cull program in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia’s two largest cities. Robinson also met with scientists who explained that habitat destruction and urban sprawl in Australia – not cats – have caused the extinction of species and endangers many more. She spoke with caregivers, grassroot activists, shelter operators, academic instructors, and government leaders about saving cats’ lives.

Robinson explained the proven success of nonlethal population control for cats.

“Given the evidence from decades of cat killing campaigns in the United States, Britain, Denmark, Israel, Canada, and Italy, it would be foolish to think Australia’s current plan will reduce cat populations or bring any benefit to wildlife,” Robinson said. “In short, the plan is cruel and ineffective.”  She is inspired by the growing  number of Australians who are demanding their government to come up with another plan to protect endangered species that won’t involve millions of cats.

Robinson, Mike Arms, CEO of the Helen Woodward Center, Diane Blankenberg, CEO of the Humane Network, and other animal protection experts offered perspectives on nonlethal approaches at the The Business of Saving Lives conference in Sydney about Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR).  They offered other views on nonlethal approaches that are available to Australia.

Robinson is asking individuals and organizations around the world – to pledge support for the humane treatment of cats in Australia.  Launched by Alley Cat Allies, the pledge calls on Australia’s Minister for the Environment to end his plan to kill 2 million cat by 2020 and use nonlethal strategies for protecting animals in Australia.  To learn more or to pledge your support visit www.alleycat.org/Australia.

I hate feral cats. I’m tired of them walking and going to the bathroom on my property. I’m tired of them killing birds. Lots of birds.

Don’t you know there are wild feral dogs and cats roaming the streets and killing a lot of animals? They don’t want their animals being killed by the ferals.

What the hell is wrong with everyone? This is stupid! Without thinking it through and seeking others’ advice, he decides to have two million cats killed. So disgusted with people.

They’re killing them because cats are killing too many animals. I don’t agree with killing 2,000,000 but I understand why they want to do it.

Why do they have to kill two million cats by 2020? That’s horrible. I never heard of such a thing.

I understand the damage cats do to other animals and properties. To kill 2 million isn’t going to solve the problem. It’s been proven it doesn’t work. If it did, why are there more cats than ever in the U.S. when shelters kill at least 70% of cats that are in them? It doesn’t work. The Minister needs to speak to experts who can offer other ideas to get the number of cats reduced in that country.
