Horses Electrocuted at National Finals Rodeo, Las Vegas, in December 2016

January 2, 2017 by Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein 10 Comments

A video has been released by SHARK, Showing Animals Respect and Kindness, detailing the electroshocking of horses at the National Finals Rodeo (NRR) which was held in Las Vegas from December 1st – 10th, 2016.
The video was originally aired on CBS Sports Network, a division of CBS.   The video revealed disturbing “instances when rodeo personnel used an electro-shocking device on horses,” SHARK President, Steve Hindi states.  “These devices send thousands of volts of electricity into the horses to make them appear wild. Rodeos will do that because horse do not naturally buck unless they are in pain. In simple terms, these horses were tortured into performing.”

During these broadcasts, CBS aired many instances of animal cruelty, all the while claiming this was “family friendly” programming and giving viewers no indication of the cruelty they were about to witness. This animal abuse included horses being punched and slapped in the head, one horse having their eyes poked and jabbed, and many horses who were secretly electroshocked to force them to perform, some in violation of the PRCA’s own rules and the animal cruelty laws of Nevada.

In addition, during the team roping performance, the contestants broke a calf’s leg, however even with this glaring injury, instead of stopping the event and getting the animal treatment, they attempted to rope the animal to get their prize money.

Spokespeople for Miller Manufacturing, maker of the electric prod, have long stated that the electric prod should not be used in a rodeo environment, and should never be used on horses. Horses are much more sensitive to electricity than other animals.. The following are quotes from Miller:
“We do not recommend our products be used in rodeos.”

“We only recommend our products be used on hogs and cattle. Do not use on horses, they are much more sensitive.”

“Any use for entertainment purposes is not something we support or condone.”
SHARK has created a petition calling on CBS to sever all ties to the PRCA and NFR.

“CBS has stained its good name by airing and promoting the torture of horses,” states Hindi. “What the NFR and PRCA did to those animals is not acceptable in a society that values horses and despises animal cruelty.”
If you want to see a change in this form of “entertainment,” please sign the petition and share this article so others know the the real truth behind rodeos!

Animal abuse is so rampant. To do this in full view of a television audience is bold but also shows how much they don’t care. The same should happen to the those who did this to the horses and calf. It’s only fair.

Animal abuse is very rampant and by speaking up and against it, we are the voices for the animals who can’t speak which is why our voices need to be heard. Thanks.

I can’t bring myself to watch the video. I know it happened. Watching it tears me up inside. I get so angry and have only bad thoughts about the abusers. I scream and cry for the animals. ?

I do understand your fears and concerns about watching the videos. At least, you took a stand against it which is what matters. Seeing animal abuse is never easy to view.

      Thank you for your honesty.

Rodeos are filled with animal cruelty. Why do they exist?

They exist because there are people who enjoy participating in them and others who enjoy watching them, unfortunately. Sadly, animal cruelty happens at the rodeos which advocates/activists try to help stop.

      Thank you.

I don’t sign petitions. I don’t think they’re helpful or do anything substantial to change laws which is what’s needed. This article is brutal.

CBS sucks for not doing anything. They don’t care if horses are hurt as long as they get ratings. Ratings equals money. Bottomline- it’s always about money and screw the animals.
