Man receives 2-year jail sentence for killing and beheading shelter rabbit

Bobby Carothers beheads pet rabbit in Iowa animal shelter

Carothers admits killing rabbit because he was hungry

He receives two years in jail for his henious act of animal cruelty

A 64-year-old Des Moines, Iowa man was sentenced to two years in jail after he killed a shelter rabbit with a stick and beheading the animal.

Bobby Carothers was charged with animal torture and aggravated misdemeanor after he walked into the Animal Rescue League of Iowa on December 15th, 2019 and committed this heinous act of animal cruelty.

The rabbit named Petunia had been at the shelter after being taken from a local zoo only a week prior to her death.

He said he did it because he was hungry.

On that date, Carothers was seen walking around the shelter after it was closed for the day.   According to ARL CEO Tom Colvin, Carothers was seen walking around the shelter after it closed.    “We escorted him out and hadn’t realized at the time what he had done and so, you know, we went in and found the rabbit dismembered,” Colvin said.    “It was a horrendous scene.”

Carothers made statements about the rabbit at the shelter stating he was having rabbit stew that night according to Polk County Lt. Heath Osberg.

Carothers also admitted to killing the rabbit with a stick by cutting its whole head off and letting it bleed out because he was hungry.   He also cut off Petunia’s ears.

He wanted to be sentenced immediately.   He’s been given credit for 66 days already served.

If Carothers isn’t mentally incompetent, I can’t wrap my head around someone who could kill in cold blood and walk around as if nothing happened.

While animal cruelty is being taken seriously with this two-year sentence,  I also hope he receives the mental help he needs.

I agree that Mr. Carothers needs psychological counseling in addition to serving time in jail.

      Thank you for your comment.

Either this man is mentally ill or he’s crazy. Who could think of doing this to a pet rabbit? This world is nuts. smh

Zelda, I don’t think anyone in their right mind would ever think of doing this to any kind of pets. The world does seem like it’s getting crazier at times.

I think this is justice served. Now we need to put more felons who abuse animals behind bars where they belong!
