After a live press conference where Matt Hickey was finally allowed to purchase his k-9 partner for $1

Last night a resolution was met between the Marietta Police Department and retired Ohio police officer, Matt Hickey, who will finally be allowed to keep his former k-9 partner, Ajax, for $1.

Over $72,000 was raised by a GoFundMe page for Matt Hickey to purchase Ajax.  All but $1 will now go to Vested Interest in K9’s Inc.   The creator and Hickey haven’t decided if the page will be taken down or not.

Ohio State Representative Andy Thompson and Representative Dave Hall officially filed their “Ajax” bill with the Clerk’s Office.  The “Ajax” bill would allow political subdivisions to give retiring police officers first claim to the police dogs they have served with. According to Thompson’s facebook page, he wrote,  “We understand the strength of the bonds formed between the handler and the dog; they become part of the officer’s family, and we want to be respectful of that relationship. The bill will also include police horses in the provision because they are treated the same as police dogs in the Ohio Revised Code and are just as important.”

Victory!

Let’s not forget the new bill that was created- Ajax’s bill so other police animals can stay with their partners. Good came out of all of this.

The money raised is being used for a good cause- to protect k-9 officers with bullet proof vests. Good outcome for everyone.

The police put this retired officer through all of this and now he gets to keep Ajax for $1 when he was willing to pay $3500. Boy, that seems a bit backwards but all that matters is that Mr. Hickey and Ajax remain together. I’m so glad for the two of them.

The police dep’t wasted time and resources to not allow this man to have his dog for which he was willing to pay thousands of dollars. A head-scratcher.
